'Cultures rooted in fear' as a source or driver of the never-ending pressure to do more: absolutely! I frequently hear leaders bleating 'but I can't stop!' and, to them, it really feels like they can't.

But I once knew a leader of a huge professional services audit firm who, upon returning from holiday for two weeks, decided to ignore every single one of the emails that had piled up in her inbox - about 1,500, she told me. She took one look and decided that she wasn't going to spend another two weeks playing catch up on her holiday emails on top of her day job. She decided that if it was really important enough to these people, they would chase her up. And, she said: "Do you know what? Not one of those people wrote back to ask me their question again or to ask why I didn't reply." She said it was singularly liberating. She could begin the time after her holiday as refreshed as she had been on it.

And, I have other clients in a Middle East firm who believe that they need to be available 24/7 to their clients; really - whenever they call. There is no space and no freedom. They dance completely to their clients' tune - and I believe we teach others (clients included) to treat us this way.

I wonder how much of this behaviour about our own necessity is rooted purely in our beliefs and, when tested, how we may find ourselves much more free than we imagined?

If we slowed down, might we change our reality?

Wonderful stuff, Sarah. Your care and thoughtfulness in putting together the 'how' of Conscious Leadership shines through in your work. 'Humility cannot be manufactured - it shines through in the absence of ego' is destined to become a great quote! I cannot wait to read your book and learn more about your Three Pillars and Four Steps. It is just what we need. Great to be working with you.
